Coming from a Dutch/Afro-Caribbean heritage, Abdulaziz’s work centers on “people and cultures whose lives may not contain the drama of spot news or the visceral power of war and conflict, but whose daily struggles and ways of life are changing as our world moves into this new century.”

Lest we forget, it was the gruesome images of police brutality in places like Montgomery or Birmingham, Alabama in 1963 that brought a human rights crisis into worldview. President John F. Kennedy would disclose to aides that he had been make sick by a New York Times front page photograph showing a police dog chewing on the stomach of a teenager.

The critical contribution of the image to the struggle for equality and justice is on view at the International Center of Photography in For all the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rightsa multimedia exhibition contemplating the power of mass media in shaping, for better or worse, the attitudes of our society.
